Petiţie pentru păstrarea... internetului aşa cum îl ştim

Dragi prieteni,
 

Cei mai bogați oameni de pe planetă - adică 1% din întreaga populație - ar putea controla tot ceea ce vedem pe Internet, pentru totdeauna. Este sfârșitul Internetului așa cum îl știm și un act de distrugere a spațiului democratic de informare conceput de fondatorii săi.     

Comunitatea noastră a reușit să construiască foarte mult în acest spațiu democratic, folosind Internetul pentru a lupta împotriva corupției, a salva vieți și a oferi ajutor țărilor aflate în criză. Dar SUA și UE sunt pe cale să ofere celor mai bogate corporații avantajul unei viteze optime de vizualizare a paginilor lor, încetinind viteza de conectare sau cerând o taxă suplimentară pentru toate celelalte site-uri. Am putea pierde posibilitatea de a arăta lumii întregi imagini filmate de cetățenii-jurnaliști din Siria sau de a lansa campanii pentru salvarea planetei!

De ambele părți ale Atlanticului se iau acum decizii importante. Dar specialiștii în inovație tehnologică, susținătorii libertății de exprimare și cele mai bune companii online luptă pentru drepturile utilizatorilor. Dacă milioane dintre noi li se vor alătura acum, putem crea cel mai răsunător apel pentru un Internet liber și democratic din toate timpurile. Până acum, îmbunătățirea Internetului ne-a adus beneficii tuturor: dacă Fox News, postul de știri ultraconservator al lui Rupert Murdoch, găsea o cale de a își prezenta mai rapid conținutul video, aceeași opțiune stătea și la dispoziția presei independente care prezintă realitatea de la fața locului din Ucraina, Siria sau Palestina. Politicienii au numit acest fenomen ”neutralitatea Internetului”, iar în SUA au existat chiar legi pentru protejarea ei, până când un tribunal le-a anulat. Acum, Parlamentul European amenință să adopte o legislație care dă furnizorilor de servicii Internet puterea de a diviza rețeaua și de a controla ceea ce vedem prin încetinirea vitezei de conectare sau instituirea unei taxe pentru acces optim la site-urile care nu plătesc pentru vizualizare rapidă. 

Dar dacă ne unim forțele, îi putem încă opri! Săptămâna aceasta, vom prezenta petiția noastră globală în cadrul dezbaterii publice pe tema reintroducerii măsurilor de protejare a Internetului din SUA. Apoi, vom activa o echipă puternică de lobby având ca țintă Parlamentul European, pentru a ne asigura că toți membrii săi vor asculta vocea cetățenilor. Acesta este primul pas necesar pentru a câștiga aceste bătălii importante pe parcursul următoarelor luni.  

Furnizorii de Internet ca Verizon și Vodafone fac un lobby intens pentru un Internet al celor bogați. Iar în lipsa unui protest masiv din partea cetățenilor, au șanse mari să câștige, punând în pericol întreaga noastră comunitate.Majoritatea serverelor sunt localizate în SUA și UE, deci acest plan ne afectează pe toți. Când comunitatea noastră număra mai puțin de jumătate din membrii pe care îi are acum, am protestat și am ajutat la oprirea acordului ACTA și a legilor de cenzurare a Internetului SOPA/PIPA. Astăzi, suntem mai puternici ca niciodată. Haideți să ne unim forțele pentru a ne asigura că ceea ce ne unește pe toți va rămâne accesibil tuturor.

Until now, any improvements in the speed and functioning of the Internet benefited all of us — if Rupert Murdoch’s ultra-conservative Fox News got a faster way to stream videos, it also benefitted independent media showing reality on the ground in Ukraine, Syria, or Palestine. Politicians called this “net neutrality” and laws protecting it used to exist in the United States until a court just struck them down. Now, the EU Parliament is threatening to pass regulation that give ISPs the right to carve up the web and control what we see, by slowing down or charging for sites that don't pay.

But we can stop this. First, we will show up with massive global numbers into this week’s public meeting in the United States to decide whether to reinstate Internet protections. Then we will unleash a high powered lobby team to target the EU Parliament to ensure its committees listen to the public. This will be the big first step we need to win these important battles over the next few months.

Web providers like Verizon and Vodafone are lobbying hard for an Internet for the rich. And without a massive response from citizens, they could win, and put our whole community’s work at risk.
